Day 157

We head West

Today we leave Nice and head West along the Cote D’azur. We have booked a studio apartment at Golfe Juan Vallauris, just past Antibes, for 3 nights. It’s not far from Cannes. We drive to the Esplanade in Nice and as we are driving along the coast there seems to be a lot of traffic.

Then we get to the point were all the action is. There a long lines of taxi’s and  a red flare goes off and we are on the other side of the road in a traffic jam. I think it is a protest against Uber by all the taxi’s in Nice. We drive West past the airport and they have blocked off all the access points into the airport. It is not so bad for us as we are heading out of town but for the people coming in and to the airport the queue is long. (we found out later that it was a protest against Uber and the traffic jam went for 25 kilometres)

We see people have parked their cars up on the medium strip of the motorway and are towing their luggage on foot to the airport.

Anyway we keep on going and the traffic issues don’t seem to stop for kilometres. We actually got caught up in a road block set up by the police. Mr Policeman let the car in front of me turn left, however I was told to go straight but my Satnav said left so I had a go at turning left. He wasn’t real impressed with this and chased me down the street banged on the window and started yelling in French, all I could do is shrug my shoulders and say we from Australie? He then gave me his whistle to say don’t they have these in Australia. I thought about it, not really they just block the road off and let no one down. Lucky for us he walked off and I was free to go. Don’t mess with the French Police.

Drove through Antibes and then the harbour opened up. The water was so blue and there were people along the beach everywhere. As we were looking out toward the water I could see all these super yachts at anchor. One looked familiar, Mr Packers old super yacht that James now owns. There was about 5 really massive superyachts all nearby Mr Packers’ Artic P.

Anyway drove past to our place had a picnic lunch on the beach and then went for a drive prior to meeting our host at 1400 for the room.

We drove past public and private swimming areas all the way to headland (the feature image of this post shows one tiny private mooring) and then went for a walk on the rocky beach. We spotted these guys sitting on the rocks looking out to the superyachts and realised they were paparazzi.

What a crack up. Paparazzi waiting to take photos of the celebrities off Antibes.

They had huge cameras and with their binoculars were just camping out waiting for the photo. This was entertaining for about 5 minutes then we realised it would be very boring until you got the photo opportunity. Wasn’t much action but there were plenty of tender boats going over to the restaurant. We took a photo of the road entrance to the Hotel Du Cap looks way out of our budget.

We have now met our host and settled into a nice little apartment in a large complex with swimming pool and direct access to the Marina. After unpacking I got on the Wifi. I checked out the news and sure enough James Packer is going out with Mariah Carey and partying on his super yacht off Antibes and was spending time in the Hotel Du Cap. It’s funny because it’s not about the celebrity but the Aussie connection that we were fascinated with. Why didn’t James ask us to join him?

The kids had a swim while Summer and I made some dinner.

We then went for a walk out the marina, plenty of money in this place, just like Monaco but much more layed back.
