Same Relaxed Routine.
Same routine as previous days, the kids are catching up on school work, Summer blogging and I am doing the domestics and checking over the internet for the next bucket list destinations to pick. Pretty keen to visit the Acropolis and Museum in Athens as the start of our next adventures, so I will looking for good hotel deals in down town Athens.
We’ve decided to arrange a hire car for the next 2 days.
The hire car company was pretty relaxed. We walked in the door, asked to hire the cheapest car they had. For only $20 euro per day a deal was struck and I simply handed over my passport and $40 Euro and I had the keys. We didn’t even have to check over the vehicle or pay a huge deposit. He said it has no fuel but $20 Euro will get you around for the next 2 days.
We were driving back past our place by 1800 drove to the other side of the Island to a beach called Stafilos. It is lucky to be 5km from our place. The bar man said dolphins and seals had been playing here on the rocks all day. Had a beer at the local Taverna and kept a look out for dolphins and seals, they must have went for a rest when we arrived. Walked down to the beach to see if they would come to play, no luck for us. Drove back into town for a feed and then returned home for bed.
Go little hire car.
We got up and going this morning and headed to Ag. Ioannis sto Kastri, or Mamma Mia Chapel for the morning. The roads are heaps of fun, semi smooth with heaps of bends and would be awesome if we had a sports car but unfortunately we had a little 3 cylinder Chevy micro car. It was lucky to get up some of the hills. You couldn’t go from 2nd to 3rd gear on a uphill ascent even when redlining it in 2nd because during the gear change it would wipe off speed and the gearing was too tall in 3rd. So this just meant I had to go faster around the bends to keep the car in 3rd (not really it was my excuse to have some fun), until Summer cracked it and Spring started to get travel sick.
We had to stop off at Neo Klima roughly half way for a coffee and to get Spring out of the car. Nice little port that caters for sailing boat hire. We watched as a few groups of grey nomads took some yachts out for the day. Got back in the car again and was not going to swap driving with Summer at this point, continued on with my semi rally driving experience for the rest of the family to enjoy.
We reached the Chapel and it is a visually spectacular rock formation. Don’t know what possessed someone to put a church out there. Anyway, we decided to climb up and have a look. It is a good climb and quite steep at points, I wouldn’t want to be scared of heights. When we got to the top it looked nothing like the movie, funny what Hollywood does for the big screen, it is a lot smaller than anticipated.
We had a look around, talked to an English couple at the top and then a boat load of tourists pulled up and climbed up for a look around. As they reached the top I wondered if that is how puffed we were when we reached the top. We returned back to the café for a beer, then some of the boat tourists returned for a beer, some of the ones that didn’t do the climb asked the others what it was like, one of the best responses was “it’s just a church on top of a rock” pretty funny.
We got back in the car and drove over to Loutraki for lunch. This is a sleepy little town in the far North of Skopelos were most of the ferry’s pull into before Skopelos.
The next main stop was Kastani were the Mamma Mia beach party scene was filmed. It is a nice beach, a few locals just lazing around. Sure enough after half an hour of relaxing, the same boat load of tourists from the church pulled up. Funny they must be doing the Mamma Mia tour via boat.
We moved on from here to Milia, I think this is a much nicer secluded beach than Kastani, and then onto Panormos which is also nice and small. We stopped for a beer and let the kids play on the sand. We left approx. 1830 for Glisteri to get some photos of the arch way used as the entrance to the hotel in Mamma Mia. It is on a deserted beach with a run down un-used Taverna.
That completed our Mamma Mia tour and all in only 6 hours. We have successfully nearly completed the whole island in 1 day.
