Day 65

Outer City Tour.

Our Tuk Tuk took us on an outer city tour for the morning. Picked up at 0930 and went south to place near Kataluwa on the coast where the fisherman stand on the poles off the beach and catch fish. Nowadays we were told they more than likely get more money from photos with tourists than actually fishing off the sticks. We let Autumn have a go at some fishing and took some great photos then return to the Tuk Tuk.

Autumn fishing in Sri Lanka, not really.

We were then taken for a boat cruise on a lake to Cinnamon Island here we were shown how the cinnamon is harvested naturally and given a tour of the village. There is just a couple of families that live on the island and they farm the cinnamon and host tourists while the kids go to school via canoe.

We completed the tour and moved island’s to visit a Japanese Temple on top of a hill. Had a look around with some monks present. The cruise went for 1 hour and then we returned to the main land and toured a Herb Garden for a run down on all the natural medicines available in this part of Sri Lanka. Even had some natural form of Veet applied to my leg hairs to demonstrate how good this stuff was to Summer. From here we departed to a turtle farm that rescue injured turtles and nurse them back to a stage where they can be released back into the wild. It was actually a small place but pretty cool to be up a close to a logger head turtle.

So cute, the girls wanted to take one home.

They also had the baby turtles that would be released back to the ocean everyday at 1700. We didn’t return for releasing time. From here we then drove inland past all the farms to a Hindu temple carved into the rocks. There was also a monk school in progress as we walked up to the rock temple. Pretty impressive and we were the only tourists up there. Had a look around and then returned to our homestay 1400 for some late lunch and then school. It then decided to smash down with rain. The first storm we have actually had here in Sri Lanka and it was a ripper. The girls finished school 1800 as with the storm and walked up the street for a Sri Lankan calamari curry and returned for bed.

Day 66

Cricket Semi Final Aust v India in Sri Lanka.

Today we decided to spend the whole day in a bar/restaurant called Nautilus just up the street, we had dinner there last night and asked about the cricket and they said of course it will be on from 0700. We are not that fanatical about cricket just wanted something different to do, so we packed the kids school work, waters bottles, towels and made a real day of it.

The place is right on the beach so when we got there approx. 1030 the girls were straight in for a swim. I talked with the locals about the cricket and the score at the present, I got a real informed answer, it was funny in no uncertain terms they all wanted India to loose. The girls returned and then I went for a quick dip. Then it was school work time, if the girls were able to get 2 hours of solid school work in prior to lunch that would be good. The problem was the Wifi in the place was so slow. It was a very long morning of school work but the girls got what they could get done and went in for another swim prior to lunch.

Tough, school by the beach, Unawatuna, Sri Lanka.

Just had a light lunch and then it was school work again. Couple of hours of school work another swim as it was so hot. I watched the cricket with the locals it was really fun as they were really willing for an Indian loss and riding every ball. When it became clear Australia was going to win they all filtered out and went back to work I guess? Sparked up a conversation with a New Zealand couple who were travelling the world for 12 months also. We had a good laugh when we realised it would be a Aust V NZ final. Ended up staying all day and having dinner here then strolled home for bed.
