Just don’t swallow the water.
This morning we did very little. Went down to breakfast as per usual and returned to the room. The girls put on some TV, just watched some kids cartoons. Summer and I just vegged out, looked over a few things on the computer and then got frustrated at how slow the Wifi was in the place. We then got ready Autumn and I did a bit of a recon mission, strolled around the local to see if we could get a Long Tail boat tour of the canals. Yes we could and only a 10 minute walk away at the end of our street and across the road behind a big hotel on the river.
So we walked back grabbed Summer and Spring and returned to arrange the ride. While we were over our side we also decided to have a light lunch from the street stalls. Pork Satay sticks, and they were the best with sticky rice.
We then went up the wharf and grabbed a tour. 1 hour and we would see the floating market, some temples, feed the fish and people’s shacks along the canal system. It was actually really busy when we departed and surprised how choppy the water was. Advised the kids to not speak so the water would not go in there mouths. We got splashed a bit and didn’t want swallow the water as we crossed over the river to the canal. Once we were in the canal system it was really relaxing. We just kicked back and let the driver take us to the points of interest. His English was limited just pointed and said what it was, allowed us to take some photos and then move on. I was really impressed with the veggie gardens in the canal don’t know why, they just seemed out of place amongst the reeds and houses on the waterway, the veggies did look good. I must have also been equally impressed by the shacks as I looked through the photos of the day, how many derelict house photos can one person take?
The Long Tail boats are a wild bit of kit. The driver has to move the whole engine (4 cylinder turbo diesel) on a counter lever rudder to steer the boat. Needless to say tight turns are rubbish as the driver pulls hard on the rudder and lifts the prop out of the water to wipe off speed and then puts it back in to finish off the turn. The whole boat then gets a massive lean on and it feels like you are going to tip. Did the whole loop and returned to the wharf at 1630. Was going to go back to the room but the girls found a hair braid lady. Autumn and Spring waited patiently and then it was there turn for some braids. The lady doing the braids was awesome. I have never seen hair braided this quick as Spring had 6 braids installed and Autumn 1.
Returned back to the room for the girls to check out their new hairdo and then ventured back out for some dinner. Had a nice feed in the local street and then returned to the room put a movie on for the girls and I went for a walk to Khao San Rd as it was a Saturday night. It was pure madness. If I was 20 it might have been enjoyable, the street was blocked only pedestrians access and you couldn’t move it was single file the whole way, there was battle of the dance music with 2 opposing pubs just blearing out music right in the middle, didn’t know who to listen to, was offered tarantula’s, laughing gas and other stimulants to ease the pain of the doof doof music. Anyway battled through to the other side and was glad I walked the road. Returned to the girls and their movie had just finished and they were off to bed. A nice easy day in Bangkok.
